The Government has announced its first Road Safety Strategy in over a decade!
The strategy plans to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads by 65% (by 2035).
Thousands of people suffer life-changing injuries each year, and 4 people die each day as a result of drink-driving in the UK.
The current drink-drive limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is set to 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath, making it one of the highest in Europe.
With a tighter drink-drive limit of 22 micrograms set for England and Wales, this will bring them inline with Scotland, which cut its drink-drive limit in 2014.
Within this new strategy, it also looks at convicted drink-drivers having alcohol interlocks fitted to their vehicles, as well as suspended driving licenses for those who are suspected of drink or drug-driving offences.
Managing Director Chris Deith says “After 24 years in the road safety industry, AlcoDigital believe that ALL drivers should ensure their level is zero before driving, and that at a very minimum England, Wales and Northern Ireland should adhere to the same drink-drive limit of 22 micrograms for everyday drivers, in line with Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. ANY alcohol has a detrimental effect on reaction times and perception of risk.
We would also strongly advocate for a more stringent limit of 9 micrograms to be implemented for Learner Drivers and Professional Drivers (such as passenger transport and freight logistics) which is the standard adhered to throughout the majority of Europe, and already applies in the UK to those in the Airline, Rail and Maritime industries.”
